Central Office of the High Court
You can commence your case or file documents in the Central Office of the High Court in person or by post.
Stamp Duty (the cost associated with lodging a document – MUST be obtained in the Stamp Office at Áras Uí Dhálaigh prior to arrival.
Attendance to the Central Office is by appointment.
In the event that you need to change or cancel your appointment, it is important that you do this as soon as possible to make the appointment available to others.
Cancelling or rescheduling an appointment is easy. This can be done by accessing the link in the email notification sent to you.
Civil Office Counter Staff
The Counter staff can help you with your questions but they can't give you legal advice.
For example, the counter staff can provide general information about the way things happen in court, they can also direct you to the Court Service Website where you can download forms. They cannot tell you what to say in court, or what to put in your forms.
If you need legal advice, you should contact a solicitor, Free Legal Advice Centre (FLAC) or Community Law and Mediation. There are a lot of different support services that may be able to help with your situation like Money Advice Budgeting Service, and The Citizen Information Centre near you is also a good place to look for information to help resolve your issue.

Counter
At the counter, you can give documents to staff. This is called 'lodging or filing a document'. You must bring your document and 2 copies which will be date stamped by counter staff . One copy is for the Court, one for you and the other copy to be given to the other side of the case.
Giving documents to the other side is called 'serving' a document. All the documents, forms, fees and ways to get something in front of a Judge are explained in the court rules section of our website.
Everybody has to follow these rules. Generally, the court decision, also known as the court order, will be sent to you by post but if you need another copy, you can ask for one at the counter. There may be a fee for this.
Court of Appeal Office
The Court of Appeal public office is where a person lodges paperwork to appeal a High Court Order in civil proceedings.
It is located on the ground floor of Áras Uí Dhálaigh in the Four Courts complex.
The office is open, by appointment, Monday to Friday from 10.00 to 16.30.
For paying Court fees, you need to go to the Stamp Office on the ground floor.

Welcome to Courtroom No. 4 in the Four Courts, this courtroom is a typical example of a courtroom in the Gandon Building.
Generally, it is best to sit near the back of the courtroom until your case is called.
When a Judge enters a courtroom you will hear ‘all rise’. Everyone stands as a mark of respect for the Court. People sit down when the Judge sits.
Once your case is starting, please make the registrar aware of your presence.
Please prepare all your documents before entering the court to save time.
If you need to leave the courtroom while the court is in session, make sure you leave and re-enter quietly.
You do not need permission to leave, unless your case is currently being heard.
You must silence all calls and notifications on mobile devices when you are in the court room. You can take notes, but you must not take photos or videos. You cannot eat or drink in the courtroom. Please do not speak unless you are asked by the judge to do so.

Public Entrance
The public entrance to the Four Courts complex is on Inns Quay, Dublin 7 and is facing the river. The public have to enter through a security hut. There are sometimes media photographers outside who are likely to be more interested in high-profile cases. Please be aware, there is no public parking on site, so the best way to get to the Four Courts is via public transport.
The Luas redline ‘Four Courts’ stop is located directly behind the complex. To get to the public entrance from the Luas stop, follow the black railings around to the front of the building (riverside). There is also a bus stop on Inns Quay. Please visit transportforireland.ie to plan your journey.

To enter the Four Courts complex, you will have to go through security, like in an airport. You will be asked to put personal items such as your phone and keys in a tray and to walk through a scanning arch. Your bag will be put through an x-ray scanner.
Please bring ID, as you may have to present this for certain services. Please make sure you do not bring any dangerous objects with you on your visit.
After security, exit the hut into the car park/courtyard. Áras Uí Dhálaigh is the red brick building on your left and the Four Courts is the grey building on your right.

Stamp Office
The Stamp Office is a public office where court fees are paid. You can pay using card, cash or postal order. Proof of payment is stamped onto the relevant court document.
It is located on the ground floor of Áras Uí Dhálaigh in the Four Courts complex.
The Stamp Office is open Monday to Friday from 10:00 - 12:30 and from 13:30 - 16:00.

Litigant
People who have a case in Court are called parties or litigants. Parties who have a solicitor are called represented litigants, and they usually stay in the public gallery during the case. Your legal representative will speak to the Judge on your behalf.
Parties without a solicitor are called unrepresented or lay litigants. When an unrepresented litigant's case starts, they should tell the Judge that they are present in the Courtroom. They should then follow instructions from the Judge on where to sit and what to do.
Often, unrepresented litigants will be asked to sit at the front bench so that they can use a microphone as needed. As an unrepresented litigant, you can receive advice from a non-legal helper, called a 'McKenzie Friend', but they cannot speak for you. Please have your documents ready before court and when you are asked, speak clearly and loudly.
